Pocket Bible – Leather Band with Clasp – A. Jongbloed Leeuwarden (c. 1860–1890)

Compact 19th-century Dutch pocket bible with original leather binding and clasp.

This edition of The New Testament was printed by A. Jongbloed in Leeuwarden, a renowned Dutch Bible printer. Its small size meant this type of bible was intended to be easily carried, for example, while traveling or attending church.

The binding is made of dark leather with blind-stamped borders and a characteristic leather clasp flap. The pages feature a gilded edge, a detail often applied to personal devotional books.

Inside, the texts are printed in the classic Statenvertaling (States Translation) style and include register pages, psalms, and gospel texts. The book shows clear signs of use, fitting for a religious work that may have been used for generations.

A special historical object that is interesting for collectors of religious printed matter as well as enthusiasts of antique books with character.
