Monterrosso My Love | Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer
Monterosso mon amour; a novella [Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer]
Original Dutch version
'Does dissatisfaction turn into contentment if you accept it?' Carmen, a childless woman past middle age, isn't so sure. She decides to take the plunge into her past. Nothing compels her to do so. She is the well-to-do wife of a former diplomat, enjoys her afternoon sherry without remorse, and as a literature lover ('she feels old because she loves to read') is very active in the local public library. Recurring memories of her first holiday on the Mediterranean with her parents in Monterosso (Cinque Terre), where she had her first kiss underwater, lead her to take a plane to Italy alone for a short spring break. His name was Antonio. Who knows, after all these years, she might run into him again. What no one yet knows—except the narrator of this story—is that unforeseen circumstances will force her to stay in Monterosso much longer than intended. The impasse this creates comes to an end one afternoon when she meets a young boy from the village.
