Large Antique Devotional Cross Pendant – Christ Corpus – c. 1900
Antique devotional cross pendant with Christ corpus, made of metal and wood, presumably dating from the early 20th century.
The cross consists of a dark wooden core within a metal frame, onto which a detailed cast Christ figure is affixed. Behind the head is a halo, a classic element in Catholic devotional art.
Due to the large suspension loop at the top, this type of cross was intended to be worn on a chain or rosary, or as a religious devotional item. Its relatively large size gives it a clear presence and it was often used for personal devotion or processions.
The metal has developed a beautiful warm patina over time. The construction with small rivets on the back and the combination of wood and metal are typical for religious objects from the early 20th century.
A characterful religious object that is both historically interesting and decoratively strong within a collection of religious or devotional objects.
