Antique Mezzotint "The Departure from Brighton" – Wheatley R.A. – London 1796

€350,00

Original late 18th-century British mezzotint titled The Departure from Brighton, published in London on May 1, 1796.

The scene was painted by Francis Wheatley R.A. and engraved by John Murphy. The print was published by Colnaghi & Co, one of the most prominent London art dealers at the time.

The work is officially dedicated “by Permission” to Field Marshal His Royal Highness the Duke of York, Commander in Chief of His Majesty’s Forces — a rare and historically interesting dedication that places the print directly within the military context of the late 18th century.

The scene depicts a military farewell at a camp, with rich detailing in uniforms, horses, and the landscape background. The deep shadows and soft tonal transitions are characteristic of the mezzotint technique from this period.

Printed on handmade paper with natural signs of age, consistent with its age of over 225 years.

An authentic piece of British Georgian printmaking with clear provenance, full margins, and original publisher's line.
