Antique 2-Piece Set “From White Cities under Blue Skies” – Louis Couperus – 1912/1913 – Large Format
Monumental travelogue by Louis Couperus in original Art Nouveau binding.
This two-volume edition of From White Cities Under Blue Skies was published in 1912 and 1913 by L.J. Veen in Amsterdam. The work belongs to Couperus' artistic travel descriptions and journeys through Italian cities such as Venice, Florence, and Pisa, with extensive reflections on Renaissance art and architecture.
The books are large format (29.5 cm) with original cream-colored linen bindings, featuring light blue decoration and gold-stamped titles. The design is typical of the early 20th century and aligns with the aesthetic Art Nouveau style.
Richly illustrated with reproductions of classical masterpieces, including works by Raphael and Luca Signorelli. The illustrations are clearly printed and form an essential part of the whole.
The set is in fair to good antique condition with visible signs of age: discoloration of the linen, wear to the spine and corners, and discoloration of the page edges. The interior is complete and stable.
A characterful and decorative antique set by one of the Netherlands' most important authors.
