A Victorian Satire in Leather, Gold, and Color

This two-volume edition of The Comic History of England, published in 1864 by the Punch Office, 85 Fleet Street, London, is a superb example of Victorian book culture at its finest. Written by Gilbert Abbott A’Beckett—a regular contributor to the satirical magazine Punch—the work recounts English history not solemnly, but with irony, wit, and humor. It is a reflection of a self-aware Victorian England that dared to view its own past with a wink.

The true power of this edition lies in the illustrations by John Leech (1817–1864), one of the most important British illustrators of the 19th century and instrumental in the development of the modern political cartoon. The edition contains twenty hand-colored etchings and over two hundred wood engravings. The colors are still bright and vibrant, without significant fading. The original tissue guards are intact—an important detail, as they are often missing or damaged in many copies.

The binding enhances the whole. Both volumes are bound in half-leather with raised bands and gilt titles. The gilt-edged top is remarkably well-preserved: warm in tone, even, and glossy. The leather shows a natural patina with light craquelure and subtle wear at the corners—appropriate for its age and aesthetically appealing. No harsh damage, no disturbing restorations; only the soft traces of 160 years of history.

The interior and binding are sturdy, the paper is clean with minimal signs of aging. The whole exudes care and respect.

The combination of an original 1864 edition, a complete two-volume set, hand-colored plates, intact tissue guards, and an attractive half-leather binding makes this a collectible and decoratively strong item. Similar sets typically trade in the higher antiquarian segment, depending on condition and execution.

With their size of 22 cm high and just under 3 cm thick per volume, the books have precisely the classic proportions that are convincing both in hand and on a shelf. The warm leather, gilt-edged top, and marbling give them a calm, stately appearance—without being heavy.
