It was written in the stars that one day the most brilliant writer who ever lived would be done justice. Not with yet another selection from his work. No: with the integral translation of all his stories, for the first time, in one voluminous book. Edgar Allan Poe Complete!
As a writer, Poe first made a name for himself in Baltimore, where in 1830 he won a prize with his story Manuscript Found in a Bottle. Thanks to his very diverse interests and his enormous erudition, he was soon able to develop into a critic, essayist, and magazine editor of stature, and the fundamental principles he laid down for, among other things, narrative technique, became classic. Poe's Ligea and Eleonora testify to his adoration for his child-wife Virginia, who inspired him to his best work; they married when she was fourteen and her death, twelve years later, would mentally ruin him. Poe was, to an equally strong degree, both a man of feeling and intellect, both a romantic and a rationalist, and the genius, the uniqueness of his work is therefore that in it, boundless fantasy and imagination are tempered and guided by a rare ability to analyze and relativize. In addition to the psychological crime story – The Tell-Tale Heart –, Poe could thus also become the forerunner of the modern detective story, in which intellect and intuition also go hand in hand; thus Poe, with his three C. Auguste Dupin stories, including the groundbreaking The Purloined Letter, laid the foundation for the Sherlock Holmes formula, which would find followers in all possible variants. Is Poe merely the father of the Detective novel, as he was once described by a critic? No, if one considers The Balloon-Hoax and Hans Pfaall – the first future and science fiction stories –, and The Gold-Bug – the first adventure story –, then Poe should rather be given the predicate: Father of all Genres.
This collection contains all 75 stories Poe wrote in his short life (1809-1849). (No less than 33 of these appear for the first time in Dutch translation in this edition.) In addition, the novel Arthur Gordon Pym is included.
