The story revolves around the figure of Herod, known from biblical history, but here incorporated into a literary novella of the kind that appeared more frequently at the end of the 19th century. Such publications were part of a broader cultural movement in the Czech Republic, in which language, literature, and identity began to play an increasingly important role.

This copy has clearly been well-used. The paper cover is present, but the binding has largely disappeared. The booklet is therefore very fragile and should effectively be viewed as a bundle of loose or nearly loose pages.

The pages show discoloration and signs of wear consistent with their age, but the text is still clearly legible. It is precisely this vulnerable state that gives the object a certain charm, especially when laid open.

Careful handling is truly necessary. Beautiful as a collector's item or as a decorative piece with a story, less suitable for active reading.
