An impressive Victorian reference work from circa 1870: Beeton’s Dictionary of Universal Biography, published by Ward, Lock & Tyler in London.

This second, revised edition contains biographies of eminent persons from all ages and is richly illustrated with numerous steel-engraved portraits.

The book was updated to the year 1870 and forms a wonderful historical document from the golden age of British publishing.

The original green cloth binding with gilt lettering is still in excellent condition. The interior shows light, age-appropriate foxing but is otherwise very clean and sturdy.

A heavy, characterful volume that impresses both in content and decoratively.
