Ziggy's Collection

Two beautifully bound French poetry collections by Alphonse de Lamartine, published by Librairie Hachette in Paris in 1922 and 1924.

These matching antique books contain Premières Méditations Poétiques and Nouvelles Méditations Poétiques, two significant works of French Romantic literature.

The books are finished in elegant half-leather bindings with marbled boards and colorful, marbled endpapers. The light brown leather spines are richly decorated with red floral designs, gilt details, and graceful lyre motifs. Dark title panels with gold lettering give both books a classic appearance.

The top edges are also gilt. The meticulous finish and the matched bindings make these two books particularly attractive as a set.

Lamartine’s poetry addresses themes such as love, nature, transience, faith, and the human experience. In addition to the poems, the volumes include annotations and supplementary works, such as La Mort de Socrate and Le Dernier Chant du Pèlerinage d'Harold.

Both books are in good antique condition. The bindings show minor signs of wear and the paper has a natural age-related discoloration. The book blocks appear sturdy and the decorative finish has been beautifully preserved.

A remarkably lovely pair for enthusiasts of French literature, historical book bindings, and classic interiors.
