Ziggy's Collection

A beautifully bound first edition of Les Dieux ont soif by the French writer Anatole France, published by Calmann-Lévy in Paris in 1912.

The novel is set during the French Revolution and follows the young painter Évariste Gamelin, who, under the influence of revolutionary ideals, becomes increasingly involved in the Terror. Les Dieux ont soif is one of Anatole France's better-known historical novels, and he received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1921.

This copy is bound in a fine half-leather binding with marbled boards and matching marbled endpapers. The spine is richly decorated with gilt ornaments and two green leather title labels for the author and title. The top edge of the text block is also gilt, while the other edges remain largely undeckled.

The spine, in particular, has been exceptionally well preserved. The gilt work is still bright and crisp, and the green title labels provide a beautiful contrast to the warm brown leather. The combination of the original 1912 edition and the fine, classic binding makes this an attractive copy both bibliographically and decoratively.
