New Testament with Leather Binding and Flap – A. Jongbloed Leeuwarden (ca. 1860–1890)
An authentic 19th-century New Testament in a compact format, bound in leather with its original clasp and gilt-edged pages.
This type of small Bible was intended for personal use and daily transport. The handy size and sturdy leather cover make this immediately apparent. Over the years, the binding has developed a beautiful, natural patina with visible wear along the edges, contributing to the appearance of a well-lived object.
The gilt edge is still clearly visible and gives the book a refined look that is characteristic of better-produced copies from this period.
The edition was published by A. Jongbloed from Leeuwarden and follows the tradition of the Statenvertaling (State Translation). Inside, in addition to the Gospels, Psalms are included, complete with musical notation.
The interior is in good condition and remains firmly intact. Only the rear endpaper has come loose, making the spine construction at the back visible. This does not affect the readability or structure of the book.
A characterful and well-crafted copy with both historical and decorative value.
