The Great Reformers - Pieter Vergers - D. Bolle, Rotterdam ca. 1894
A monumental late 19th-century history of the Reformation, richly illustrated with twelve large colour plates.
In De Groote Hervormers, the Dutch educator and historian Pieter Vergers describes the lives, work and struggles of the most important figures of the Protestant Reformation. Luther, Melanchthon, Zwingli, Calvin and other reformers are set against the background of the religious and political upheavals of the sixteenth century.
This substantial volume is the second edition, published by D. Bolle in Rotterdam around 1894. Particularly attractive are the twelve colour lithographs of historical events from the Reformation, produced by Tresling & Co. in Amsterdam. All twelve plates are present.
The book is bound in its original brown cloth publisher's binding with gold lettering on the title and a yellow/gold-coloured top edge. Inside the front cover is an old owner's inscription from 1918 and a later added sticker from Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
An imposing antique book for collectors of Protestant history, the Reformation, Lutheriana and Dutch historical books.
