Large Wooden Lion | Woodcarving from Indonesia / Bali | 29 cm

A large hand-carved wooden sculpture of a reclining lion, executed with a distinct and characterful design. At approximately 29 cm in length, the sculpture is substantial in size, while the wood used is remarkably lightweight.

The lion is fully carved in the round. The head is particularly striking, featuring an open mouth, powerfully defined eyes, and a large mane consisting of dozens of individually carved surfaces. The paws, claws, tail, and body shape have also been hand-modeled. Minor variations and visible traces of carving emphasize its artisanal character.

The design is consistent with Indonesian woodcarving and shows strong similarities to decorative lion figures from Bali. Within the Balinese sculptural tradition, lion-like Singa figures have a long history as powerful and protective symbols. This piece was likely crafted in the second half of the 20th century as a decorative carving.

Over the years, the wood has acquired a warm, honey-brown color. Light wear, scratches, discolorations, and small irregularities in the carving are consistent with its age and handmade nature.
