Ziggy's Collection

A remarkable French historical work from 1871, written in the immediate aftermath of the Paris Commune.

Actes de la captivité et de la mort by Père Armand de Ponlevoy describes the imprisonment and death of five Jesuits during the Paris Commune. This second edition was published in Paris as early as 1871 by G. Téqui and contains biographical details, correspondence, and accounts surrounding their arrest, imprisonment, and execution.

This copy distinguishes itself through its beautiful 19th-century craftsmanship. The book is bound with a dark purple-burgundy leather spine, featuring gilt lines and a gold-stamped title. The marbled boards are complemented on the inside by exceptionally colorful marbled endpapers. The top edge of the book is also gilt.

A characterful antique book in which French history, religious history, and traditional bookbinding come together.
