The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke - John Calvin - Part 2 (1868) and 3 (1871)
Two antique volumes from The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, written by the influential reformer John Calvin (1509-1564).
This Dutch edition was published in Kampen by S. van Velzen Jr. in 1868 and 1871. The original Latin text was retranslated under the supervision of the Dutch theologian A. Brummelkamp.
In this extensive work, Calvin brings together the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke and provides detailed explanations of the biblical texts.
The printed dedication to the Dutch statesman Groen van Prinsterer in the third volume is particularly noteworthy, referencing the close connection between Reformed thought and 19th-century Dutch church history.
Both volumes are bound in traditional half-leather bindings with marbled boards, decorative spine decorations and red-brown spine labels. The clearly visible signs of age give the books a distinctive appearance.
An interesting pair of antique books for lovers of theology, the Reformation and historical religious literature.
