Ziggy's Collection

A special French history book from 1766, published in Paris by the Libraires Associés. Le Chronologiste Manuel by Louis-Mayeul Chaudon was compiled as a compact reference work in which centuries of world history were arranged chronologically.

The book covers both ecclesiastical and secular history, from Biblical patriarchs, popes, and councils to the monarchs of classical antiquity and European royal houses. It also discusses topics such as religious orders, historical treaties, universities, academies, artists, and the development of the calendar. As such, the book provides an interesting picture of the way history and chronology were organized and studied in the 18th century.

Particularly special is the large original fold-out chronological table at the back of the book. This belongs to the original edition and charts the historical reunification of various large French fiefdoms with the French crown. In many surviving copies, this fragile fold-out table has become damaged or lost over the centuries.

The book is still in a beautiful 18th-century full leather binding with five raised bands. The spine is richly decorated with gilt floral ornaments and bears a reddish-brown title label with gilt lettering. The marbled endpapers and striking red-colored page edges have also been preserved.

A characterful, over 250-year-old reference work in which history, typography, cartographic information, and traditional 18th-century bookbinding come together.
