Jesuit Anecdotes (1740) - Part 2 - At the expense of the Company - The Hague
An authentic 18th-century French book from 1740, bound in a full leather binding with gilt spine decoration.
Anecdotes Jésuitiques, ou le Philotanus Moderne is a historical work in which the Jesuit order is critically discussed. The book appeared during a period of religious and political tension and offers an interesting insight into the polemical literature of the 18th century.
This copy is the second volume of an originally three-part work.
The title page lists The Hague as the place of publication. However, historical bibliographic sources suggest that this may be a fictitious publisher's address, a practice that was common for controversial publications from this period.
The book is executed in a traditional full leather binding with raised bands and gilt ornaments on the spine. Inside, old binding materials are visible, including printed reinforcement paper and marbled endpapers.
A special historical object for lovers of antique books, religious history, and 18th-century bookbinding.
