A beautifully bound French historical and religious book from 1874, written by the Benedictine monk Dom Alphonse Guépin.

Saint Josaphat, archevêque de Polock, martyr de l'unité catholique et l'Église grecque unie en Pologne deals with the life of Saint Josaphat Kuncewicz (circa 1580–1623) and the history of the Greek Catholic Church in Eastern Europe.

Josaphat was the archbishop of Polotsk and played an important role in the religious developments of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was murdered in 1623 and canonized in 1867. This original edition was published only seven years after his canonization.

The book forms the second part of an extensive historical study in which church history, religious conflicts, and historical documents come together.

Particularly attractive is the traditional half-leather binding with gilded spine decorations, raised bands, and marbled boards. The matching marbled endpapers give the book a neat nineteenth-century appearance.

The interior is in remarkably neat condition for its age, with slight natural discoloration. The binding shows signs of wear, mainly along the edges, corners, and spine.

An interesting antiquarian work for lovers of religious history, nineteenth-century book arts, and historical literature about Eastern Europe.
