Leather Decanter with Fleur-de-Lis | Handmade | c. 1960-1980
Ziggy's Collection
Striking vintage decanter made of green glass, fully encased in brown leather and richly finished with dark leather appliqués, gold-tone decorations, and metal decorative studs. Centered on the front is a large fleur-de-lis, surrounded by floral ornaments and gold-tone lines.
The bottle is constructed from several individually shaped leather sections. The dark decorative panels feature stamped ornaments and decorative edge finishing, while the neck is braided with narrow strips of leather. The many gold-tone studs enhance the relief of the design. A large turned wooden sphere serves as the stopper for the bottle.
Underneath the leather covering is a green glass bottle, visible at the opening when the stopper is removed. The combination of glass, leather, wood, and metal and the handcrafted construction give the object the character of decorative barware from the second half of the 20th century.
The leather has developed a clear patina over the years. Wear to the gold decoration, scratches, and signs of use are visible, and especially the braided leather around the neck is weathered due to age. It is precisely in this used condition that the bottle has much character as a decorative object for a bar, cabinet, or collection of vintage barware.
