Ziggy's Collection

Decorative religious icon with a relief depiction of the Virgin and Child.

The relief shows Mary with a crown and the infant Jesus in a style that clearly refers to traditional Byzantine iconography. Surrounding the image are the classic abbreviations MP and IC XC, referring to Meter Theou (Mother of God) and Iesous Christos.

The image is executed in a pressed metal relief with a warm brass-colored patina and is mounted on a wooden back panel. The background has a fine hammered texture that adds depth to the relief.

This type of devotional icon was widely used in the 20th century as religious wall decoration in Catholic and Orthodox households.

An atmospheric religious object with clear historical inspiration from traditional icon art.
