Lettres Vendéennes ou Correspondance de trois amis, en 1823 is a French historical-literary work by Joseph-Alexis Walsh, better known as Vicomte Walsh. This copy is the second and final volume of the sixth edition, published in 1843 by L. F. Hivert in Paris.

The work is structured as a correspondence between three friends and covers the history, culture, and social relations of the French Vendée. Special attention is paid to the French Revolution, the royalist uprisings, and the Catholic traditions of the region. The book reflects the author’s staunchly Catholic and monarchist ideology.

This sixth edition was expanded to include, among other things, a letter from Pope Leo XII, as stated on the title page.

A distinctive feature of this copy is the nineteenth-century full leather binding. The reddish-brown leather is adorned with blind-stamped ornaments, fine gilt border lines, and a richly decorated spine with a gilded title and volume number.

The interior features striking blue marbled endpapers, with circular patterns in various shades of blue and fine brown-gold veining. The book block edges are also decoratively finished with a bluish marbling. The combination of the leather, gilding, and marbled paper forms a beautiful example of traditional nineteenth-century bookbinding.

On the page facing the title page is a signature image used by the publisher as a mark of authenticity.

The book is in reasonably good antiquarian condition, with clear signs of age and use. The leather binding shows wear to the spine, edges, and corners, with damage to the head and tail of the spine. The front hinge is fragile and requires careful handling. The paper shows scattered foxing and age-related discoloration. The book block itself remains firm, and the text is clearly legible.

An attractive antique French book for enthusiasts of nineteenth-century bindings, French history, Catholic literature, and traditional marbled paper.
