Two volumes from the five-volume Dutch edition of And the Sun Went Down by the British writer Marguerite Steen, published by the Zuid-Hollandsche Uitgevers Maatschappij (Ad. M.C. Stok) in The Hague. The series was translated into Dutch by C. van Eijsden and featured illustrations and cover design by Anton Pieck.

This set consists of the first two volumes of the series:

I. Bristol's Chains
II. Dark Africa Calls...

The complete Dutch edition consists of five volumes and is completed by Emily's Flight, The Black Death and Phoenix Risen. These three volumes are therefore not included in this set.

A distinctive feature of this edition is the illustrations by Anton Pieck. In addition to the illustrations in the text, the books contain beautiful full-page illustrations, including color plates in Pieck's recognizable detailed style. The decorative cover design is also by him.

The books are bound in light linen publisher's cloth with gold and color printing. The combination of the neat original bindings and the illustrative work of Anton Pieck also makes the books interesting for collectors of Dutch book design and illustrated editions.

The novel is set against a historical and colonial backdrop and follows several generations and events over the course of the complete five-volume cycle. The edition is thus both an example of popular historical literature from the mid-twentieth century and of the extensive illustrative work of Anton Pieck.
