A small and well-worn Catholic prayer book from the early 20th century. This Vade-Mecum der Christenen (Vade Mecum for Christians) was published by Zech et Fils, Papal Publishers in Braine-le-Comte, Belgium. The ecclesiastical imprimatur is dated April 18, 1912, in Tournai, allowing the book to be accurately dated to around 1912.

Its compact size was intended to make the book easy to carry. The name vade-mecum, literally "go with me," fits this purpose perfectly. The book contains an extensive collection of Catholic prayers, communion exercises, and litanies, including prayers for Holy Mass, the rosary, the Stations of the Cross, and prayers to various saints.

The original leather binding is particularly attractive. The dark brown cover features gold-stamped decorative borders, a small religious ornament on the front cover, and the title Vade Mecum in gold on the spine. Inside are striking green endpapers with a dense leaf motif and a religious black-and-white illustration opposite the title page.

The book clearly bears the marks of intensive use over more than a century. The cover and binding are heavily damaged, and several sections and pages have come loose. A characterful relic of Catholic daily faith in the early 20th century.
