Roman Vesperal Missal - Dom Gaspar Lefebvre - Bruges 1937

1,333.00TL

French-Latin Catholic missal from the interwar period, compiled by the Benedictine Dom Gaspar Lefebvre and published by the liturgical movement surrounding the Abbey of Saint-André near Bruges. This edition dates from around 1937 and was printed by Desclée De Brouwer in Bruges.

The compact missal is bound in a black leather cover with a gold-stamped title on the spine, blind-stamped decoration, and a beautiful gilt dentelle on the inside edges. Particularly striking are the deep blue marbled endpapers and the decoratively colored page edges.

Inside, the traditional Roman liturgy is extensively presented and explained, often with the Latin text alongside the French translation. Throughout the book are characteristic black-and-white illustrations by René de Cramer, including depictions of the Mass, the altar, the Eucharist, and the Lamb of God.

The copy shows clear signs of many years of use. The leather binding has wear along the edges, and there is a damaged spot on the back cover. A few leaves around page 82 have come loose due to frequent use, and several pages show minor edge damage and dog-eared corners. The rear endpaper is partially detached, although the binding itself does not appear to be structurally loose. The original ribbon markers are heavily worn.

A characterful interwar missal in which both Catholic liturgical history and nearly ninety years of actual use have remained visible.
