Van Allerlei Slag (1883) - Justus van Maurik Jr. - 8 plates by Johan Braakensiek
A beautifully designed book from 1883, with a richly decorated red cloth binding and detailed illustrations by the Dutch artist Johan Braakensiek.
Van allerlei slag is a collection of novellas and sketches by the Amsterdam writer Justus van Maurik jr. In eight stories, he takes the reader into the daily life of the nineteenth century, with humorous encounters, unusual characters, and recognizable human quirks.
The stories offer an interesting snapshot of Amsterdam city life, social relations, and the customs of that period.
This third edition was published in 1883 by Tj. van Holkema in Amsterdam and contains eight illustrations. Johan Braakensiek's images bring the stories to life with detailed depictions of street scenes, domestic interiors, and the lives of ordinary people.
The original red cloth binding is particularly beautiful, featuring black ornaments and an elegant gold-colored title print. An attractive example of late nineteenth-century decorative book design.
