Ziggy's Collection

Four consecutive antique volumes of Histoire de la littérature française by the French literary historian Charles Gidel, published in Paris by Alphonse Lemerre within the Petite Collection Lemerre.

The series covers the development of French literature from its origins and the Middle Ages, through the Renaissance and the 17th and 18th centuries, up to 19th-century French literature. The four volumes present were published between 1875 and 1892 and together comprise parts I through IV of the work.

The uniform green cloth publisher's bindings are particularly attractive. The front covers and spines feature gold-stamped titles, borders, and the characteristic device of publisher Alphonse Lemerre. All four books also have red edges. The stars on the spines indicate the consecutive volumes.

The four books come from different editions of the same Lemerre series. As a result, the publication years are not in chronological order. This is a cohesive historical set compiled over a long period from various available editions.

Part IV covers the period from 1815 onwards and is designated Première Partie. The later Deuxième Partie is not present. The set offered therefore consists of four of the five parts.
