Commemorative Book Oranje-Nassau | Marriage of Juliana & Bernhard 1937
This comprehensive commemorative volume, "Oranje-Nassau - Mecklenburg - Lippe-Biesterfeld," was published in 1937 to mark the marriage of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard on January 7th of that year. The book was published by Van Holkema & Warendorf in Amsterdam, edited by W.G. de Bas, and features an introductory word by Dr. H. Colijn.
Across more than 400 pages, the book provides an in-depth exploration of the history of the House of Orange-Nassau and Lippe-Biesterfeld, the youth and background of Juliana and Bernhard, and the events surrounding their engagement and wedding. In addition, the book contains chapters on topics such as the position of the Prince Consort, the Dutch Red Cross, the Dutch East Indies, and the wedding celebrations in Suriname and Curaçao. Numerous historical photographs, genealogical charts, coats of arms, and other illustrations accompany the text.
The production of the book is also exceptionally well-crafted. The typography and cover design were created by the well-known Dutch book designer and type designer S.H. de Roos. The original blue linen front cover features gold-colored lettering and colored family coats of arms. Inside, there is, among other things, a color portrait of Princess Juliana based on a miniature by E.L.H. Woutersen-van Doesburgh.
A beautiful and content-rich historical document from the Dutch interwar period, directly linked to one of the most famous royal events of the 1930s.
