Soapstone Box with Lid - Hand-turned - c. 1880–1920
Small cylindrical box with matching lid, turned from natural stone. The material resembles soapstone or steatite and has a warm honey-brown colour with grey, beige and reddish-brown inclusions.
Both the box and the lid were formed on a lathe and then finished smoothly. The natural pattern of the stone is clearly visible all around and differs distinctly on each side.
The size and simple cylindrical shape are reminiscent of small utilitarian boxes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It may have been used for snuff, pills or other small items. Without original documentation, its exact function cannot be determined with certainty.
The surface shows signs of use, small edge damage and discolouration consistent with its age and use. Some dark lines and natural irregularities in the stone are also visible.
