Franklin Porcelain Japanese Teacup | Kachō Jūnikagetsu | 1985
Vintage Japanese porcelain teacup from 1985 by Franklin Porcelain, from the limited series Kachō Jūnikagetsu, or "Flowers and Birds of the Twelve Months".
This piece is richly decorated all around with peacocks among purple-violet Japanese irises. On one side, a peacock with its tail fully fanned out forms the centerpiece of the scene. The many individual tail feathers are refined with eye-shaped details and gold-colored accents. On the other side, a second peacock stands among the irises.
The scene aligns with the Japanese tradition of kachō-e, in which birds and plants are the central focus. Irises are among the classic seasonal flowers in Japanese art and, together with the peacocks, form an exceptionally rich nature scene here.
The decor is framed at the top and bottom by cobalt blue geometric decorative bands and fine gold-colored accents. At the bottom of the scene, a stylized blue and gold-colored water motif has also been applied.
The underside bears the original Japanese Franklin Porcelain mark with the series name 花鳥十二ヵ月, the designation for limited edition, © 1985 FP, and JAPAN.
Part of a twelve-piece collector's series, with each cup featuring its own unique flower and bird motif.
