Bible in Story and Image – G. Ingwersen – Klaas Pijlman – 9th Edition 1968

A richly illustrated Dutch narrative Bible by Gesina Ingwersen, published in 1968 by the Bijbel-Kiosk-Vereniging in Amsterdam. This ninth edition of Bijbel in vertelling en beeld contains stories from both the Old and New Testaments and is illustrated by Klaas Pijlman.

Ingwersen wrote the work to make the stories of the Bible accessible to families, older children, and Sunday school and evangelism work. The Bible stories are therefore not presented literally as a Bible translation, but in a clear narrative form, supplemented with explanations and references to the relevant Bible passages.

The extensive illustrations form an important part of the edition. In addition to many black-and-white drawings, the book contains full-page color illustrations by Klaas Pijlman, including depictions of Adam and Eve, Moses, and Naomi and Ruth. The cover was also designed by Pijlman.

The book is bound in blue cloth with gold lettering on the spine, blind stamping on the front cover, and illustrated endpapers. The top edge is colored blue-gray. A transparent protective layer was later applied around the binding.

At the front is a handwritten inscription showing that the book was given as a gift at Christmas 1969 upon leaving Eben Haëzer Sunday school, a fitting sign of use given the original purpose of this narrative Bible.
