Numa Pompilius (1786) - Antique 18th Century Edition - Florian
An authentic 18th-century edition of Numa Pompilius, Second Roi de Rome by M. de Florian, printed in 1786 in the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands.
This book is incredibly old, and one of the first highly antique books added to my collection, which is why it is very dear to me. It may look worn, but many books from this era have higher quality paper. The pages are made of a kind of fabric and feel rough to the touch when you leaf through this book; which you can do without feeling like you have to be extra careful, as it is also bound so sturdily that the pages do not just fall out. Because of this strong printing and binding method, this book has remained completely intact. Books nowadays are printed on heavily bleached paper and cannot handle moisture well and you won't find them in this condition; old books like this were made to remain in good condition even in a damp storage space, and in many situations will even still be restorable, whereas modern books would crumble to pieces from misery.
Published by the associated booksellers of Amsterdam, Leiden, Rotterdam, and Utrecht.
Printed on handmade rag paper (cotton/linen base) with characteristic uncut edges.
Featuring a beautiful title engraving. A historical-literary work from the Enlightenment, dedicated to the second king of Rome.
