Large Antique Devotional Cross Pendant – Christ Corpus – c. 1900
Ziggy's Collection
Antique devotional crucifix with the corpus of Christ, made of metal and wood, presumably dating from the early 20th century.
The crucifix consists of a dark wooden core in a metal frame, onto which a detailed cast Christ figure is attached. Behind the head is a halo, a classic element in Catholic devotional art.
Due to the large hanging eye at the top, this type of crucifix was intended to be worn on a chain or rosary, or used as a religious devotional object. Its relatively large size gives it a striking presence and it was often used for personal devotion or processions.
The metal has developed a beautiful warm patina over time. The construction with small rivets on the back and the combination of wood and metal are typical of religious objects from the early 20th century.
A distinctive religious object that is both historically interesting and highly decorative within a collection of religious or devotional objects.
