Životem – Complete Czech Catholic Annual 1940 – 24 Illustrated Editions

A complete bound volume of Životem, a Czech Catholic publication series issued by the Exerciční dům in Frýdek. This fifteenth volume was published in 1940 and contains all 24 issues, numbered 337 through 360.

The individual parts cover diverse topics surrounding the Catholic faith, liturgy, saints, family, and social life. Particularly attractive are the many original illustrations and illustrated title pages that have been preserved in the bound collection. The design varies from traditional religious imagery to striking scenes concerning spiritualism, family life, and Christ as a worker.

The book thus forms not only a religious publication but also an interesting example of Czech Catholic folk culture and graphic design at the beginning of the Second World War.

Additionally, an original folded prospectus for Dějiny křesťanské charity by Dr. Bedřich Vašek has been preserved at the back, with advertisements for other Catholic publications on the reverse side.

Bound in a simple dark red linen cover. The book is in neat condition for its age, with normal yellowing and light signs of wear appropriate for a copy from 1940.
