Japanese Satsuma Tea Set - 15-piece - Late Meiji c. 1895-1915 - Hododa Mark
An exceptionally complete antique Japanese Satsuma tea service, executed in a deep cobalt blue ground with richly gilded hand-painted decorations.
The set consists of six cups with matching saucers, a teapot, a sugar bowl, and a milk jug. All pieces bear the same original Satsuma mark and form a matching set.
The decoration features refined depictions of Japanese courtiers, samurai, geishas, and landscapes, executed in traditional Satsuma enamel work with extensive gilding and characteristic craquelure.
Based on the mark and the craftsmanship, the set was likely manufactured during the late Meiji period to early Taisho period, circa 1895 to 1915.
Given its age of over a century, the set is in neat antique condition. There are some old restorations present on the sugar bowl, milk jug, and one cup, as well as a small chip on one saucer and a small chip on the inside of the teapot. Additionally, slight wear to the gilding is visible, consistent with age and use.
An impressive decorative and collectible Satsuma set that fits perfectly within a classic interior or a collection of Japanese export pottery.
