The Working Silence | History of the Great Religious Orders | First Edition 1957
A richly illustrated first edition from 1957 on the origins and history of the great Western monastic orders. The working silence was published by Elsevier in Amsterdam and Brussels under the editorship of L. Engelbrecht O.F.M.
Separate chapters deal with, among others, the Benedictines, Cistercians, Cistercians, Augustinians, Norbertines, Knights Templar, Dominicans, Franciscans, Carmelites and Jesuits. It looks not only at their religious origins, but also at their development, monastic life, architecture, art and place in European history.
The large hardback edition is richly provided with historical photographs and images of monasteries, church interiors, art and medieval sources. Particularly beautiful are the large maps on the endpapers, which show important monasteries and centres of the various orders across Europe and the Mediterranean region.
This copy also includes a separate typed sheet containing Il Cantico delle creature by Saint Francis, alongside an abridged Dutch version of the Canticle of the Sun.
The green cloth book itself is beautifully preserved and has a sturdy binding. The original illustrated dust jacket is still present, but shows clear damage, tears and missing parts.
