Encyclopedic Dictionary for Greater Netherlands – K. ter Laan – First Edition 1937
A characteristic Dutch reference work from the interwar period: the Encyclopedisch Woordenboek voor Groot-Nederland by K. ter Laan, published in 1937 by G.B. van Goor Zonen in ’s-Gravenhage.
This first edition comprises 700 pages and combines the functions of a dictionary and an encyclopedia. In addition to Dutch words and concepts, the work devotes extensive attention to place names, historical figures, geography, and the history of the Netherlands and Belgium. As such, the book also provides an interesting snapshot of the Dutch world of knowledge at the end of the 1930s.
The edition is particularly attractive. The book is bound in a red-brown marbled cover with stamping on the front cover and spine. The entire text block is decoratively marbled on three sides in ochre, red, and dark shades.
The interior has been neatly preserved given its age. The cover shows clear signs of age and use, particularly along the corners and the top and bottom of the spine.
