Three consecutive antique volumes of Clarisse Harlowe, the famous epistolary novel by the English author Samuel Richardson. This French edition was published in Paris by Lemarchand in An X of the French Republican calendar, or 1802.

The set consists of the first three volumes of the edition and is bound in early 19th-century half-leather bindings with marbled boards. The spines feature gilt-stamped lines, title, and volume numbering. Inside are striking hand-marbled endpapers in shades of turquoise and brown.

Each of the three volumes contains its corresponding full-page engraved frontispiece. The French text is the translation by Pierre-Prime-Félicien Letourneur, indicated on the title page as a new and complete translation based on the original edition revised by Richardson.

More than two centuries of use have left clear traces. The leather and marbled boards show wear and patina, with wear to the edges, corners, and spines. The paper shows age-related discoloration, foxing, and slight old moisture stains. The book blocks remain firm, nonetheless, and the three volumes still form a particularly attractive early 19th-century ensemble.
